Meet Mirabel Cha-ah: A crochet prodigy making waves at 23

Mirabel Cha-ah, a 23-year-old creative mind, has taken Cameroonians by storm with her exceptional crochet craftsmanship.

Her story is one of passion, skill, and a determination to turn threads into transformative accessories.

Specialising in the art of crochet, Mirabel uses thread and pins to handcraft an array of accessories, including bags, shoes, caps, dresses, toys, and flowers.

The creative mind, who hails from Kom in the North West Region, has showcased a level of artistry that has garnered attention across social media platforms.

Mirabel’s journey into the world of crochet began with admiration for her mother, who was also a skilled crochet artist.

As a young girl, Mirabel would join her mother during crochet sessions, absorbing the techniques and intricacies of the craft.

“My mum was a crochet artist, I used to admire her handmade articles when I was growing up, so I would crochet along with her whenever she was crocheting,” she told MMI.

Over time, her curiosity and desire for excellence led her to delve deeper, conducting research to enhance her skills and take her craftsmanship to new heights.

Reflecting on her evolution as a crochet artist, Mirabel said, “I didn’t know crocheted items, apart from baby wears, could be valuable until I gave it a try and people loved it.

“That is how I became more creative by generating new ideas every day.”

However, Mirabel’s creative journey is not without its challenges.

Procuring quality materials for her creations poses a significant hurdle.

She expressed difficulties in sourcing materials within the country, relying on expensive imports to continue her work.

“Firstly, I face difficulties in getting good materials here in the country like shoe soles, canvas, bag chains, and others. I only order from a lady who buys from China and sells to me expensively. If I can have access to any shoe industry, or where I can get my materials easily, it’ll be best for me,” she said.

Mirabel expressed a hope for easier access to materials, envisioning a more sustainable and cost-effective supply chain for her art.

In the face of these challenges, Mirabel has bigger dreams.

“I’ve ever dreamt of having a crochet shop of my own, where I can train some people who will join me to create in bulk and also to reduce unemployment.”

Her vision extends beyond personal success, aiming to make crochet a valuable and viable means of livelihood within her community.

“I’ve always wished to make crocheting, valuable in my community, giving youths hope that they can actually sit in the comfort of their homes to produce valuable items, to earn a living,” she said.

Residing in Bamenda, Mirabel currently operates her crochet business from home.

She crafts exquisite pieces that find buyers fascinated by her distinctive creations.

Her determination to force her way through craftsmanship mirrors the increasing determination by young Cameroonians to engage into entrepreneurship.

The country’s youth have previously relied on the state, the largest employer, for jobs but the growing youth unemployment posses an increasing challenge.

Youth like Mirabel, who are striving to make a difference, serve as an inspiration to other young Cameroonians.
