Authorities have imposed a ban on all sporting activities, in Upstation Bamenda, located in the Mezam division of Cameroon’s North West region.

In a prefectural order signed Wednesday, August 16, 2023, Simon Emile Mooh, the Senior Divisional Officer (SDO) for Mezam, notes that mass sporting activities usually carried out by the population on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays are henceforth prohibited.

“With effect from the date of signature of this present order, mass sporting activities around Upstation Bamenda, notably the old GRA, Governor’s Junction, Customs’ Junction, and Monument Junction, are hereby prohibited on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays,” the prefectural order reads.

This decision comes amidst growing concerns over the safety and security of the local community, which has been steeped in conflict for the past six years. In response to the unrest and instability that have marred the current security situation, the authorities have taken this action, which many feel does not represent their desire to protect the population. Upstation Bamenda has been a hub for various group exercises and sporting activities.

The civil administrator, however, directs that a sporting facility created for that purpose remain available in the Ntamulung neighbourhood.

“Parcours Vita remains available for the purpose,” he said, warning that “any person or group of persons who contravene this order shall be punished in accordance with regulations in force.”

He tasked the administrative and law enforcement officers concerned with ensuring the strict implementation of the new order.

The ban, which affects various sports and recreational activities, has been put in place to ensure the well-being and protection of residents in the area but it should be noted that most city dwellers use the aforementioned days for sporting activities to keep fit.

The prefectural decision is expected to have a significant impact on individuals who favour exercising in the vicinity of Upstation rather than Parcours Vita.
