Mimi Mefo Newuh salutes Eto'o
Renowned and award-winning journalist Mimi Mefo Newuh has taken to her social media to not only challenge the unwarranted attacks but also pay tribute to Samuel Eto’o Fils. The founder and editor-in-chief of Mimi Mefo Info did this by acknowledging Eto’o’s contributions to the sport and his tireless efforts to bring about positive change within the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT).
In the annals of football history, few names command as much respect and admiration as that of Samuel Eto’o Fils. From his electrifying performances on the pitch to his persistent commitment to the advancement of African football, Eto’o has left an unforgettable impact on the beautiful game. However, beyond his exploits as a player, it is his role as a leader and agent of change that truly sets him apart.
Mimi Mefo expressed the sentiment that many people who have seen Eto’o’s transition from the field to the head of football administration shared when she said, “We will never forget!”
Eto’o’s incredible journey from the vibrant streets of Douala to the prestigious stages of European football is truly legendary. With an illustrious career that lasted for more than twenty years, he left an indelible mark in the world of football, establishing himself as one of the most prominent players from Africa. However, he has been facing myriads of challenges since he took over FECAFOOT.
It was a brave move on Eto’o’s part to campaign for and win the position of FECAFOOT president and to uphold accountability and transparency. Despite facing immense pressure and scrutiny, he embarked on a mission to unearth the hidden truths and systemic challenges plaguing the federation. Addressing him directly, Mimi Mefo was bold in her assertions.
“You could have opted to remain in the comfort of your wonderful homes abroad…but you didn’t,” she said.
Eto’o’s tenure at FECAFOOT has been characterised by bold reforms and a relentless pursuit of excellence. In just over two years, he has implemented significant changes, challenging the status quo and striving to elevate Cameroonian football to new heights.
“You have exposed sides to FECAFOOT that were never public knowledge. Today, everyone claims to be a master of how you ought to manage, because of your transparency. They forget that before you took over, Cameroonian football was already in the gutters, same as everything else in the country. People expect you to wave a magic wand and fix things that have been rotten for decades, in a couple of years. You are FECAFOOT president, not a magician,” Mimi Mefo said.
“We will not forget how many changes you have made…,” Mefo emphasised, underscoring the transformative impact of Eto’o’s leadership.
Indeed, Eto’o’s influence extends far beyond the boardroom. Throughout his illustrious career, he has served as a global ambassador for African football, showcasing the continent’s talent on the world stage.
“We will not forget how far you carried the country’s name to the world throughout your career,” Mimi Mefo stated.
But Eto’o’s contributions extend beyond the realm of sports. As a player, he was a vocal advocate for social justice and equality, using his platform to champion the rights of his fellow athletes.
“Even as a player, you fought for better pay and bonuses…,” Mimi Mefo noted, highlighting Eto’o’s commitment to fairness and inclusivity.
Moreover, Eto’o’s impact transcends the boundaries of football. His advocacy played a pivotal role in securing the hosting rights for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), defying sceptics and naysayers to bring the tournament to Cameroon.
“After 1972, it took 50 years for Cameroon to host the AFCON, and if not for your intervention, it might not have happened. When the rest of the Western world stood against it, saying there was COVID, you fought back.” Mimi Mefo affirmed.
Yet, despite his remarkable achievements, Eto’o remains a target of criticism and scrutiny, subjected to unwarranted attacks and unfounded allegations.
“You have NEVER said in public or in private that you want to become president…,” Mefo emphasised, dispelling misconceptions and setting the record straight.
Highlighting some of the key challenges facing the country, which have been largely mismanged by the Biya administration, Mimi Mefo was keen to point out that it is not Eto’o’s duty to solve them.
“You are not the cause of the Anglophone Crisis, you are not one of the old leaders in power, you didn’t mismanage the Boko Haram war, you didn’t suppress opposition voices calling for change, you didn’t kill or endanger the lives of journalists, you have not suppressed press freedom,” she wrote.
In closing, Mimi Mefo expressed gratitude and admiration for Eto’o, acknowledging his enduring legacy and unwavering dedication to the advancement of Cameroon and African football.
“We appreciate you, Eto’o…and we will NEVER FORGET,” Mimi Mefo concluded, echoing the sentiments of a nation grateful for the contributions of a true icon.
