Minister Tchiroma kick- starts campaign for Northern regions to be granted ‘Special Status’

Cameroon’s North and Far North regions are the most impoverished regions in Cameroon despite their commitment to the regime of President Paul Biya, origins of the region say .

To Issa Tchiroma Bakary, elite of the North region of Cameroon, the regions deserve a special consideration for haven contributed so much by supporting the regime.

Speaking on the program “La Varite en Face” on Equinoxe television Sunday January 5th 2020, the minister of Employment and Vocational Training said he sees no issue with northerners demanding the creation of a special status for the regions to properly address their issues.

While boasting that president Paul Biya’s Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement- CPDM has always been winning elections in the regions, the president of the National Salvation Front political party rubbished claims by the Cameroon Renaissance Movement party of haven won presidential election in regions in 2018.

The northern regions have conserved the post of the president of the national assembly in Cameroon since 1992. The regions also count several members of government since independence.

Besides that, Cameroon’s first president Ahmadou Ahidjo originated from the North region .

Despite the appointment and election of several personalities from the regions to top decision making positions in Cameroon, Tchiroma regrets that the poverty level remains high.

He recounts how some kids still study under trees in some villages due to insufficient classrooms and benches.

Worst still, Issa Tchiroma Bakary says the ravaging effects of Boko Haram insurgency in the regions has greatly affected the literacy level and development of the area. According to results of Cameroon’s last population and housing census conducted in November 2005, the Far North region has the highest population of 3.111.792 inhabitants while the North region comes the second place with 1.687.859 inhabitants, a numerical strength that is equally reflected on the electoral list in Cameroon.

Reacting to a statement made by Ahmadou Ali; one time minister of justice and elite of the North region stating that the next president should come from the north regions of Cameroon, Issa Tchiroma Bakary attests that the numerical strength of the regions can guarantee that only through the ballot boxes. On why Issa Tchiroma Bakary is running for a municipal seat in the North region of Cameroon, he says his political party wants to influence the wellbeing of the population and participate at the level of decision making in Cameroon.
