Large crowds of women from all walks of life thronged Bamenda’s Commercial Avenue this morning in celebration of International Women’s Day 2024. Held annually on March 8th, International Women’s Day is a global event celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also serves as a call to action for accelerating gender parity and highlighting the ongoing struggles women face.

This year’s theme, “Invest in Women; Accelerate Progress,” resonated widely in Bamenda. However, some of the messages displayed during the march struck a discordant note.

One banner, in a surprising appeal, declared: “Fon of Fons, husband to all Bamenda Women, give us a new market.” This referred to President Paul Biya, raising eyebrows among many onlookers. Responsibility for local infrastructure projects like markets typically falls to city councils and regional authorities, not the head of state. Furthermore, it remains unclear how a new market specifically addresses the challenges faced by women in Bamenda.

Another banner carried a message in French that translates to: “Papa Paul Biya, the Man of Peace, see our tears.” This sentiment clashed with the reality on the ground. President Biya’s 41-year tenure has been marked by an inability to resolve conflicts plaguing Cameroon. Issues like rising youth unemployment are considered root causes of the Anglophone and Northern region conflicts.

These contrasting messages highlight the complexities of the situation in Bamenda. While women clearly desire progress and investment, as echoed by the International Women’s Day theme, frustrations with the central government and a lack of clear solutions remain evident.
