Morocco Mauls USA to Book Olympic Semi-Final Spot

Paris – Morocco stormed into the Olympic men’s football semi-finals with a resounding 4-0 victory over the United States on Thursday. The Atlas Lions, buoyed by a fervent home crowd, delivered a masterclass in attacking football, leaving the Americans stunned at the Parc des Princes.

Captain Achraf Hakimi was instrumental in Morocco’s dominance, contributing a goal and playing a key role in their overall performance. Soufiane Rahimi opened the scoring from the penalty spot before the interval, and Ilias Akhomach and Hakimi extended the lead in the second half. Mehdi Maouhoub completed the rout with a late penalty.

The victory sets up a mouthwatering semi-final clash against either Japan or Spain on Monday in Marseille. Morocco, who topped their group ahead of Argentina, are emerging as strong contenders for the gold medal.

The North African side has captured the imagination of the sizeable Moroccan diaspora in France, who have turned out in force to support their team. Their vibrant and attacking style, spearheaded by the likes of Rahimi, Akhomach, and Ezzalzouli, has proven to be a formidable force.

The United States, despite their valiant efforts, were unable to match Morocco’s intensity and creativity. The loss marks the end of their Olympic campaign.

Meanwhile, the Olympic football tournament continues with the remaining quarter-finals taking place later today. The standout fixture sees hosts France face Argentina in Bordeaux. The match is set against a backdrop of controversy after Argentina players were caught on camera singing racist chants aimed at French players during the Copa America celebrations. FIFA has launched an investigation into the incident.

Spain and Japan will also battle it out for a place in the semi-finals.
