Mount Cameroon Race preparations begin, Test Race slated for Jan. 20

The test race for the 29th edition of Mount Cameroon Race of Hope has been slated for January 20, with the Cameroon Athletic Federation issuing guidelines for participation in the pre-test.

The details have been conveyed through a recent release signed by Eteki Njoh, the Southwest Regional President of the Cameroon Athletics Federation.

The test race is traditionally held one month before the initial race and usually serves as a pre-selection trial for the international competition scheduled for February 24, 2024.

The test race is set to take off at 7:00 am, with the route extending from Molyko Stadium to the Intermediary Hut of Mount Cameroon and back.

Participants are required to adhere to the following modalities:

  1. Presentation of a photocopy of national ID or photocopy of birth certificate for juniors.
  2. 02 4×4 photos.
  3. Medical certificate (to be obtained at the federation doctor’s office).
  4. Licence fees: 3,000 FCFA.
  5. Registration fees for the test race are 1,500 FCFA.

Interested individuals are urged to register at the athletics league secretariat located at Court Junction, Buea.

The outlined requirements aim to ensure a streamlined and organised process for the test race, serving as a precursor to the renowned Mount Cameroon Race of Hope.

Historically, the Mount Cameroon Race has seen athletes from more than 10 countries, including Cameroon, Nigeria, Kenya, Chad, Gabon, Congo, Uganda, Tunisia, Morocco France, and the USA, among other countries.

Last year’s competition featured close to 600 athletes, including 20 from 12 foreign countries.

While Cameroonians have traditionally monopolised top positions in the race, athletes, particularly from the North West Region of the country, have consistently won top positions in the last few years.

Last year marked 50 years since the race kicked off in 1973.
