MTN, Orange accused of “illegally” blocking accounts receiving donations for Kamto’s COVID-19 fight fund

Prof Maurice Kamto’s Survie-Cameroon-Survival-Initiative, (SCSI) has hit another roadblock in its financial journey.

After banks were called to close down accounts receiving funds for the SCSI, mobile telephone network operators with mobile money services seem to have followed suite.

MTN and Orange Cameroon have been accused of illegally blocking accounts receiving donations for the SCSI. Many suspect the move has been called for by government officials.

According to Christian Penda Ekoka-Chairman of the SCSI management committee, the telecoms companies “are hindering the production of COVID-19 prevention materials thereby contributing to the aggravation of the sufferings of our fellow compatriots.”

“This act is contrary to business ethics and calls to question their corporate social responsibility” he adds.

Weeks back, Prof Maurice Kamto had warned against any attempt to stop the plan stating that it will be tantamount to hurting innocent Cameroonians.

To the politician, SCSI is non partisan and seeks to only provide better conditions for Cameroonians most affected by the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
