Muea residents protest building of water catchment in their neighborhood

Some residents of Muea, Buea in the South West Region, have strongly opposed the building of a water catchment in their locality.

They held a protest on June 13, 2022.

Locals of Muea originally had two drinking spots, popularly referred to as “Njonji up” and “Njonji down.”

It is reported that the upper Njonji drinking spot was developed into a catchment some 10 years ago — and it, however, dried up.

“There is no water in Njonji up” a local said.

The population on their part, attributed the water scarcity to the building of the water catchment.

It is reported that the Buea Council, Monday got to the Njonji down, in order to build another catchment, but met fierce resistance from the locals.

The population depends on a spring water, where the council intends to construct a catchment.

The locals strongly protesting against the building of another water catchment reiterateing that: “years ago they built the Njonji up and today water is not flowing from there.”

According to them, building another catchment will increase the likelihood for another possible dryness in future.

However at the moment the report was made, the Council workers in question had left the scene to hold a meeting and deliberate on what next to do.
