National Assembly: Lawmakers frown at violence, road accidents, COVID-19 negligence

Cameroon’s eldest member of parliament has stated that no degree of disagreement with the central government can justify the killing of Cameroonians by separatists.

Hon. Laurentine Koa Mfegue in her capacity as the eldest member of parliament was speaking in an opening speech Thursday, March 11, 2021 to launch 2021 legislative year in Cameroon.

She condemned the killing of three traditional rulers in Esoh Attah village, Lebialem Division in the South West Region on the night of February 13th by people government says are members of the Red Dragons separatist group.

“Perpetrators should be arrested and exemplary punishment meted on them to deter others from emulating,” rhe parliamentarian stated.

With more than seventy people recorded dead in Cameroon as a result of road accidents from 1st January to March 10th, 2021, the eldest member of parliament is of the opinion that Cameroon’s ministry of transport headed by Jean Ernest Ngalle Bibehe and the national gendarmerie are not doing enough to secure the lives of Cameroonians while on the road.

She made allusion to the Falaise Sanchou accident in the West Region that claimed the lives of 56 people on the night of January 27, Foumban/Bangate accident that left five dead and Falaise Mbe accident in Adamawa region that killed 7, wounding many others.

The parliamentarian challenged the government to carry out a veritable diagnosis of the issue, both technical and human, to reduce the number of road accidents.

With the first ordinary session of the national assembly opening at the time when COVID-19 is threatening normal life, the eldest member of parliament frowned at the continuous negligence of COVID-19 preventive measures.

She called on Cameroonians to respect the measures and take vaccine when it will be available.


Addressing the government, Hon. Laurentine Koa Mfege reminded them not to give a blind eye to other diseases affecting Cameroonians during this period of coronavirus pandemic.

She mentioned tuberculosis, typhoid, cancer and many more that need urgent attention.

At the local administrative level, the MP recognisrd the putting in place of regional councils to facilitate the process of decentralisation.

The eldest member of parliament challenged city mayors to tackle issues of bad roads, electricity, hygiene and sanitation, urban disorder and insecurity.

In the domain of sports, Hon. Laurentine Koa Mfege applauds the performance of Cameroon’s intermediate lions in the just ended African Football Championship in Cameroon.

She called on the national football team to proudly defend the national colours in the course of African Cup of nations in 2022.
