NCC Publishes Cameroon’s First Media Mapping

The National Communication Council (NCC) puts the number ofedia organs in Cameroon at 760, in a new document presented to the Prime Minister on Tuesday, January 7.

The NCC President, Joseph Chebonkeng Kalabubsu, presented the report, titled “Media Mapping in Cameroon”, to PM Joseph Dion Ngute.

The media mapping project took two years to complete and provides a detailed directory of 760 officially declared media outlets operating across the country.

The NCC report categorizes these outlets into 95 television channels, 139 commercial radio stations, 169 community radio stations, 232 print publications, 72 online media platforms, and 65 cable operators.

According to Joe Chebonkeng, this directory will significantly enhance the NCC’s ability to regulate the media landscape.

“It will help the National Communication Council because from this document, we already know exactly who does what and where,” he explained to CRTV.

The resource also provides precise addresses for all registered media bodies, streamlining processes related to licensing, frequency management, and oversight of media operations.

The 10-chapter document is structured according to Cameroon’s 10 regions.

Authorities believe it will also enable the government bodies and other stakeholders to better support the press and ensure media accountability.

The PM said the NCC document will strengthen regulatory enforcement and promote the social responsibility of media practitioners in the country.

This initiative represents a pivotal step in Cameroon’s efforts to enhance media governance and transparency in the communication sector.
