Thirty-seven people have been confirmed dead and 18 others seriously wounded in a road accident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday, December 27th, 2020 in Ndikiniméki subdivision, Mbam et Inoubou division in the Centre region of Cameroon.

In an interview to the press Sunday, December 27th, Absalom Woloa Monono, Senior Divisional Officer of Mbam et Inoubou Division says the accident happened at 2:00 am at a place called Nomale Bridge situated along national road number 4 linking Yaoundé and Bafoussam in the West region of Cameroon.

According to Absalom Woloa Monono, a seventy-seater bus matriculated LT 130 belonging to Avenir Voyage inter-urban transport agency from Bafoussam to Yaoundé dived into a valley.

Eighteen wounded passengers have been transported to the Ndikiniméki District Hospital and Makenene Health Centre while 37 bodies have been taken to the Yaoundé general hospital mortuary.

The SDO of Mbam et Inoubou division has called on family members to immediately visit the hospital for proper identification.

Though other sources have blamed the accident on overspeeding, administrative officials in Mbam et Inoubou division say elements of the firefighting unit, gendarmes, and police officers are still busy retrieving corpses and survivors at the moment and will examine the cause of the accident later.

Sources in Ndikiniméki say the death toll might possibly rise given the gravity of wounds sustained by some passengers.
