Donga Mantung: Schools kick off amid lockdown in the North West Region.

Today, Binka and Tabenken villages in Nkambe, Donga Mantung Division, kicked off the 2023–2024 school year, while the rest of the Northwest Region observed a separatist lockdown.

Students and pupils on their respective campuses were present, clad in uniforms, as it is the official date for school resumption across Cameroon.

GHS Tabenken, GTC Tabenken, and GHS Binka, major schools in Nkambe Central Subdivision, are in full swing as classes have started.

Primary schools across the two villages witnessed the same scenario.

The school authorities in Nkambe, whom MMI contacted for comment, declined to respond due to fear of reprisal attacks.

Amid Ghost Town

Nkambe resumed school amid a traditional Monday lockdown, which most parts of the North West Region observed. Six of the Region’s seven Divisions were locked down as schools failed to resume. Very few schools in the Southwest Region, mostly those in urban centers, managed to record students on the first day.

Classes resumed in Donga Mantung on the first day of school resumption, amid hopes that classes will also resume in other parts of the region.

Many say they are optimistic that students will have a more promising school year, as there have been almost zero calls for a school boycott by separatists.
