Cameroon’s new Parliament building, constructed to the tune of FCFA 56 billion, will be inaugurated in a special ceremony on Saturday, November 30, 2024, a statement from the National Assembly has said.
The building is located in the Ngoa-Ekelle neighbourhood in Yaounde, the capital city.
According to the National Assembly, the building was constructed with the help of the Chinese government.
Hon Cavaye Yegue Djibril, long-time speaker of the National Assembly, shall preside over the event on behalf of President Paul Biya.
Also expected at the event is His Excellency Mr. Zhang Qingwei, Vice President of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly of China.
It should be recalled that, in November 2017, an overnight fire consumed a large part of the building hosting sessions for Cameroon’s 180 parliamentarians.
The blaze consumed four of the building’s seven floors, but no human casualties were recorded.
The Chinese government offered to reconstruct the new parliament building, which now pends inauguration on Saturday.
