Nigeria, today October 1, 2022, celebrates its 62nd year as an independent nation.

The country gained its independence from British rule on October 1, 1960.

Unlike Cameroon which has had just two heads of state since its independence, Nigeria has so far had 13 heads of state since its independence from Britain.

The country, currently led by President Muhammadu Buhari constitutes 36 states with an estimated population of over 200 million inhabitants.

Most university students, since the month of February have been unable to proceed with their education as a result of a strike by the Academic staff Union of Universities (ASUU)

In his last independence day address, President Buhari expressed his grief towards the ongoing strike which has disrupted the country’s tertiary educational system.

He said, “I must confess that I am very pained by the recurring disruption to our tertiary education system and I am using this Independence Day celebration to re-iterate my call on the striking ASUU members to return to the classroom while assuring them that will deal with their contending issues within the limits of the scarce resources available.”

“This administration has made appreciable progress in redressing these issues that have been lingering for over eleven years, “he emphasized.

Meanwhile, a good number of Nigerians have used the opportunity to campaign for the election of Peter Obi in the upcoming 2023 elections.

According to Ebube, resident of Festac Lagos ,”This particular move is tagged 4 million match for Labor party’s presidential candidate Mr Peter Obi.”

Most Nigerians appear to believe Peter Obi is up to the task and capable of competently taking the country to a greater dimension for the good of every citizen.
