A lady of Nigerian origin has been shot dead along the Kumba-Mamfe road in he South West region
The victim was one of many passengers on board a bus plying the road when gunmen opened fire at them.
The deceased had left Douala and was heading for Nigeria when she lost her life in the conflict zone.
According to the driver, MMI gathered, three passengers were on board the car when armed men opened fire. Their action left another passenger – a young boy injured.
“The boy is at the emergency unit of the District Hospital in Kumba while the body has been deposited in the mortuary,” a source reveals.
The Nigerian Union chairman of Kumba, reports say, has described the incident as ‘an unfortunate situation’.
Victims mistaken for military?
A source familiar with the incident says the lady and her sons were most likely mistaken for soldiers.
The source says “the vehicles were on what transporters refer to as ‘Express waka’, travelling with a convoy”.
“This,” he says, “was probably misinterpreted by the gunmen who thought it was a military convoy”.
He adds that ‘Express waka’ is common on that road especially with those travelling between Nigeria and Cameroon”.
