Following the tragedy that engulfed Nkambe on February 11, one life was lost and more than 80 individuals were injured. As a result, five of the most critically wounded victims have been transported by air to the Bamenda Regional Hospital for immediate medical care.

According to Dr. Denis Nsame, the director of the Bamenda Regional Hospital, a total of five severe cases were received, with three females and two males. Several individuals have suffered blast injuries, with one person having lost both limbs and another experiencing a blast to the face. A CT scan has been conducted, and a team of medical specialists, including a traumatologist and psychologist, have been mobilised to continue the treatment that was initiated in Nkambe.

While visiting the hospitalised victims, the North West governor, Adolf Lele Lafrique, took the time to personally reassure them that the Ministry of Public Health is working quickly to provide all necessary services to aid in their recovery process. Governor Lafrique emphasised, “All the medical personnel have been mobilised to give the necessary assistance for the recovery of the victims.”

Governor Lafrique further revealed that four individuals had been arrested in relation to the explosion. “Relative calm reigns in Nkambe despite the trauma the population now faces. As of today, 4 people have been remanded into custody,” declared the governor.

The arrest of these individuals represents a significant advancement in the ongoing investigation into the cause of the unfortunate incident, ensuring that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.

The arrest of the suspects offers a ray of hope for justice within the community of Nkambe and beyond, which is currently experiencing immense grief and devastation. The explosion has received strong condemnation from national and diplomatic missions.

Authorities are actively working to collect evidence and understand the details of the explosion, while also offering support to the victims and their families.

As investigations progress and efforts to support the victims intensify, the people of Nkambe, in Donga Mantung Division, continue to demonstrate their unwavering resolve. They recently came together during an ecumenical service in Nkambe, united in their determination to overcome this tragedy and rebuild stronger than before.
