During the “Women of Valour” event in Ghana, Nollywood star Rita Dominic opened up about a chapter in her life that remained hidden for years, disclosing the unexpected career break and personal struggles she faced.

The event, held on March 8, International Women’s Day, was organized by Ghanaian businesswoman Nana Aba and aimed at providing a platform for women to share their untold stories and inspire others. Rita Dominic, known for her stellar performances in movies such as “Girls Cot” and “The Meeting,” took center stage to share her journey, surprising the audience with the untold story of her career hiatus.

“Many do not know, but in 2001/2002, I stopped acting, I left the industry and moved to London because it was a very dark period of my life,” Dominic revealed, addressing the gathered women. The announcement shocked many, as it shed light on a side of the acclaimed actress that fans and the public were unaware of.

Dominic clarified that the hiatus was not a planned move but rather a response to personal priorities. “There came a point where I had to prioritize my family,” she explained. “Taking care of a loved one required my full attention, and I didn’t hesitate to answer that call.”

The Nollywood star went on to share another layer of her personal struggles, recounting a painful falling out with close friends she considered family. “I had these issues, I just fell out with some friends I considered family and just gave up acting for a while. I needed to get out, just leave that space for a minute,” she added.

In a heartfelt moment, Dominic revealed that her break was also influenced by financial challenges she faced during that period. “I moved to London and gave up stardom. This is something I never told people before, but while in London, I was trying to make ends meet, so I started working in a care home as a caregiver for adults with special needs,” she disclosed.

While some might perceive this move as a step down, Dominic emphasized that caring for others brought her joy and purpose precisely when she needed it the most. “Taking care of others brought me joy and purpose at the time I needed it most because I took care of my mother and my father when they were ill because I was alone with them,” she shared with the audience.

Rita Dominic’s revelation not only humanises the glamorous world of Nollywood but also serves as an inspiring testament to the strength and resilience that individuals can summon during challenging times. Her story resonates with many who face unexpected twists in their careers and personal lives, demonstrating the power of prioritizing family and finding purpose in unexpected places.
