North West:
Zhoa natives cry foul over relocation of government secondary school

Government High School (GHS) Zhoa in Fungom subdivision has been relocated to Government High School (GHS) Weh, still in the Menchum Division.

Announcing the decision, the Divisional Officer for Zhoa in a recent release said the action is meant to guarantee the “peace and safety” of staff and students.

Henceforth, GHS Weh, he said, would accommodate all activities of GHS Zhoa “until such a time when peace and their safety will be ascertained for them to return to their campus.”

Though the decision is for the safety of their kids, residents, and indigenes of Zhoa say the move is a controversial one.

They have questioned the level of security in Weh, noting that it would be ideal for their kids to continue schooling in Zhoa with increased security instead.

They add that more should be done for kids attending the government primary school in Zhoa too.

“We the Zhoa people think Weh is not safe for our students…,” says a resident who adds that the numerous roads leading to the neighboring community as well as the distance only make schooling there less safe for their kids.

Security remains a huge challenge for many students and pupils in the hinterlands of the North West and South West regions of Cameroon as separatists and government forces continue to fight for dominance.
