Northwest: Cattle rearers allegedly kill farmer in Mbaw-Nso over disputed land

By David Atangana

Suspected Mbororo herders have killed a local farmer at Mbaw-Nso in the Mbaw plain, Northwest Region of Cameroon, on Thursday, February 2 2023, MMI learned.

The farmer whose name we got as Taku was killed in a scuffle with the herders over a disputed piece of land.

“The young man by name Taku was killed by the Mbororos because of a piece of land,” a source told MMI.

He said the herders threatened Taku several times to surrender the farm to them, but he refused, leading to a brawl that claimed his life.

“He has been farming on this land before the coming of the Mbororos,” a villager told MMI adding that, “The Mbororos asked him to vacate the land and he refused stating that it is their land.”

Our sources, however, did not provide documents as proof of Taku’s ownership over the piece of land — he has been farming on for decades.

Locals also say the herders have been threatening to wipe out everyone living in that quarter to claim ownership of the land which they badly want for grazing.

The incident at Mbaw-Nso is not the first instance of clashes between villagers and cattle rearers in the Northwest Region of Cameroon.

Many times, authorities as well as security and defence forces have been passive in the face of such conflict.

“The military has been coming and going without taking any action,” a local lamented.

Locals are pointing fingers at the children of a certain Alhadji Sedeh for committing the act, but MMI cannot attest to this.

There has been no official reaction from administrative authorities following the incident.
