A nurse, Lancel, originally from Bamunkumbit, was shot and killed while on duty at a small hospital in Bafut. Local sources told MMI that he was killed by members of the Ambazonia Defence Forces (ADF), who are under the command of Norway-based Ayaba Cho Lucas.

“He was not just a nurse, but someone who cared deeply for his patients and the community,” remarked a colleague who preferred to remain anonymous. “His loss is a blow to all of us here.”

Lancel, who was not a state-employed nurse, reportedly completed his secondary education in Bamunkumbit in 2012. Details surrounding the incident are still unclear, but reports indicate he was shot in the head. His remains are currently being held at the Bamenda General Hospital.

“He was the backbone of our family, always ready to help anyone in need,” said his sister, struggling to hold back tears. “We never thought such violence would reach him while he was simply doing his job.”

The circumstances surrounding Lancel’s death highlight the ongoing challenges faced by healthcare workers in conflict-affected regions like Bafut. The Ambazonia Defence Forces, a separatist group under the Ambazonia Governing Council (AGovC) fighting for independence in Anglophone regions of Cameroon, have been accused of targeting both civilians and those working in essential services.

“Lancel was a loving son and a dedicated nurse who always put others before himself,” said a member of the Bamounkumbit community. “He was fulfilling his calling to care for the sick when this senseless violence took him away from us.”

Lancel’s death continues to highlight the human cost of this conflict, which has so far targeted mainly innocent civilians. Medical personnel, who are supposed to be neutral actors providing life-saving care, are increasingly becoming targets.

Further investigation is needed to determine the circumstances surrounding Lancel’s death. We will continue to follow this story as more information becomes available.
