36 years after a poisonous gas erupted out of lake Nyos in Menchum, North West Region of Cameroon, residents say they are yet to find their feet as a community.

The August 21, 1986 incident left thousands of humans and animals dead and others hospitalised.

Responding to the situation, government offered health care to those affected. However, residents say it ended at that and their community was quickly forgotten after the dead were laid to rest.

36 years on, they say all that remains are the scars, renewed yearly by government’s unfulfilled promises.

Recalling the incident, an inhabitant of the area mentioned that “many people died, cattle, wild animals etc. This disaster swallowed development in the locality.”

“I remember when I visited Nyos in 2015, life was still so primitive there dispite the noise the government is making saying she is doing all to bring life back to normal,” he added.

The area, he noted, is void of roads, good schools, hospitals and other social amenities.

Till date, he remarked “we have no roads there, no schools or hospitals. This is so sad and I’m calling on the government to do something special for the Nyos people.”
