A serious incident unfolded at Hospital Roundabout in Bamenda earlier today, resulting in the death of one uniformed officer and injuries to another. Two uniformed officers sustained gunshot wounds while on duty at Hospital Roundabout in Bamenda, North West Region. Reports indicate that one officer died on the spot, while the second suffered serious injuries.
Suspected Ambazonia Fighters Behind Attack
According to local reports, the attack was carried out by suspected Ambazonia separatist fighters. The armed group ambushed a mixed security control post stationed in front of the Regional Delegation of Public Health, located at the busy Hospital Roundabout.
“We heard heavy gunfire and saw people running in all directions,” said a shop owner nearby who asked to remain anonymous. “It was chaotic. Later, we saw military vehicles arrive at the scene.”
The condition of the second officer who sustained injuries is currently unknown. The location of the incident, a busy area in Bamenda, suggests a targeted attack on the security personnel present.
Targeted Security Presence
The control post, which included members of different security units, was part of ongoing government efforts to maintain order in the region. These mixed patrols are common in Bamenda, a city that has seen repeated confrontations between state forces and separatist fighters in recent years.
The area has since been sealed off, with a visible increase in military presence. Authorities have yet to release the names of the officers involved or offer an official statement on the incident.
The alleged involvement of Ambazonia fighters will be a key focus of the investigation, given their active presence in the North West Region of Cameroon and their ongoing conflict with state security forces.
Rising Tensions in the Region
The attack further adds to a series of violent events in the North-West Region, one of the epicentres of the Anglophone crisis. Security forces have been frequent targets in the ongoing conflict, which continues to impact daily life for residents.
This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
