Parents whose children attend Sacred Heart Nursery and Primary School Mankon, Bamenda, have lashed out at the school’s authorities for exposing their children to separatist attacks.
One of the parents who spoke to MMI said he was unhappy seeing his child on TV waving a Cameroon flag, because this could cause Ambazonia separatist fighters to start targeting them.
On Tuesday, March 28, the pupils were handed Cameroon flags and told to wave them as the school was visited by the Chairman of the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the Northwest and Southwest Regions.
Pictures and videos that were circulated on media platforms showed the pupils waving the flags.
The parent who spoke to MMI on condition of anonymity said accepting that those flags be distributed to the children was putting their lives at risk.
“I was shocked to see my child on television carrying a flag. I don’t need to know who gave them, but knowing the communities where we live, such shouldn’t have happened,” he said.
Another parent who spoke to us said those who gave the Cameroon flag to the children will never allow their children to carry them in public.
He said using children for propaganda is not right.
He also frowned at journalists whom he said exposed the kids on TV without hidding their identities.
A teacher of the school whom we contacted said they were taken by surprise and that they didn’t have the powers to stop the children from holding the flags.
