The Archbishop of Garoua, Most Reverend Faustin Ambassa Ndjodo, has confirmed the abduction of Father Abbé Valentin Mbaïbarem, parish priest of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Madingring.
The Archbishop reports that on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, while travelling on the Guidjiba-Tcholliré road in the North Region of Cameroon, someone kidnapped Father Mbabarem.
Ransom of 25 Million FRS CFA Reportedly Demanded
Local media outlet L’œil du Sahel reports that the abductors have demanded a ransom of 25 million FRS CFA for the priest’s release. No group has claimed responsibility, and the identities of the kidnappers remain unknown.
Archbishop Ndjodo Calls for Unified Prayer Efforts
In a public statement, Archbishop Ndjodo appealed for collective prayer within the Archdiocese of Garoua and beyond.
“May the Virgin Mary, mother of all priests, intercede for him,” the Archbishop wrote.
He further requested that all parishes in the Archdiocese dedicate a special prayer for Father Mbaïbarem on Sunday, May 11.
Security Context in the Region
The North Region of Cameroon has experienced ongoing security concerns in recent years, including incidents of kidnapping and armed violence. Some of these actions have been attributed to militant groups such as Boko Haram, though there is no confirmed link to this incident as of now.
Authorities have not yet released further information about the investigation or ongoing efforts to secure the priest’s release.
