Pastor beaten to death while protecting woman from violent partner

In Ekounou, Yaounde, a Yaounde-based pastor, Enong Moise, has been fatally beaten while trying to intervene in a violent dispute between a woman and her partner.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Monday, December 5, 2023. Pastor Moise, returning after seeing off his son, noticed the couple fighting in front of a snack bar.

A source, Mauritius Bikoue, recounted, “The pastor, returning from accompanying his son, found his assailant violently beating his girlfriend. The pastor decided to intervene, offer advice, and calm the situation.”

Tragically, the pastor was violently assaulted by his partner, identified as Nchare Njoya Aboubacar. During the altercation, Pastor Moise’s head struck a stone, causing a fracture.

The dying pastor was taken behind the Ekounou palace, left at the side of the road, and succumbed to his injuries.

Reacting to the incident, some Facebook users emphasized the need to refrain from intervening in certain disputes. Ekane suggested, “If you mind your business, you will do well in the business. Avoid issues between a couple. You’d better call the security officers to do their job.”

Nchadje Richard advocated for severe punishment if the perpetrator is apprehended: “Please let’s forget about human rights now. If this notorious husband is caught, they should sentence him to 122 years. So that any animal husband who abuses his wife should know what’s awaiting him.”

This tragic event adds to the rising cases of domestic violence in Cameroon, including the recent death of a 17-year-old girl in the East Region. Government statistics report over 56 women killed by partners in domestic violence in 2023.

Nchare Njoya Aboubacar is still on the run, as security forces have not been able to get him arrested.
