Pastor, Sub Chief among many arrested, allegedly tortured in Ndu

Kakar, a quarter in Ndu, Donga Mantung Division of Cameroon’s North West region is now experiencing relative calm after gunshots yesterday.

Heard around the Kakar Baptist Church, the gunshots were fired by soldiers on patrol.

“Some military guys going for control at Three Corners Kakar saw some suspected Amba boys and fired guns there,” a source narrates.

What took the population aback however was the reaction of the forces of law and order later.

“After some hours the gendarmes from Ndu brigade entered Kakar quarter and arrested every man they met. They did this from house to house.”

Our source adds that “the men arrested included the Pastor of the Presbyterian Church, Kakar and another sub Chief. The people were well beaten and accused of not giving the military information.”

About 30 of those arrested have been released so far he says, and “12 others kept were asked to pay ransom before their release.”

He remarks that “the people have been promised difficult days ahead if they will not be giving them information… Those released have been asked to cooperate or leave the area.”

Donga Mantung division remains one of the most peaceful as compared to others in the Anglophone regions plagued by the war. Several villages have been razed to the ground and thousands of civilians killed.

Despite the damage and calls for dialogue, government and separatists are yet to reach a compromise.
