PCC honours late Ni John Fru Ndi for promoting nonviolence

The Peace Office of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC) Saturday, October 21, crowned the late charismatic chairman of the Social Democratic Front, Ni John Fru Ndi, with an honorary award for promoting nonviolence during his political career.

The PCC’s Moderator, Rt Rev Fonki Samuel Forba, handed the award to a family representative of the late politician in Buea.

On the award, the Peace Office wrote that it was honouring Fru Ndi’s “outstanding, dedicated and fearless commitment in upholding the ideal of non-violence in Cameroon”.

Representing the late SDF Chairman at the occasion was a close family member, Tembei Cho Ndi.

In a reception speech, he said the nonviolence approach of the PCC Peace Office is also one of the goals of the Fru Ndi Memorial Foundation.

The foundation, which the family will be launching soon, he said, wants to continue the late icon’s legacy.

“Although saddened by his passing, we are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate his legacy and his tireless efforts as a promoter of non-violence ideals in Cameroon, said Mr Cho Ndi.

“We are committed to continue in the important work that Pa Ni John Fru Ndi did and we thank you for your support and your recognition,” he said.

Ni John Fru Ndi’s death in Yaounde on June 12 left no one indifferent in the nation.

The three-time presidential election candidate is best known for spearheading Cameroon’s drive towards multipartism.

Also, he was admired and respected on the political scene for his nonviolence approach to politics.

Despite Fru Ndi being his his opposition, President Paul Biya saluted the late politician in 2015 for his contributions towards peace, democracy and social justice in the country.

The PCC’s award, though coming after he is gone, seeks to promote the legacy Fru Ndi left behind.

A member of the PCC Peace Office who facilitated the award ceremony said Fru Ndi worked in line with their vision.

“This individual has done marvelously in influencing the political, socioeconomic life of the nation, be it religious settings, social settings, wherever the situation may warrant, this person has always taken it as a pride of concern to preach non-violence,” he said, referring to the late Ni John.
