Bamenda: Police Officer Kills Soldier Over Mistaken Identity

A Cameroonian soldier was shot and killed by a police officer in Bamenda’s notorious “Seven Doors” neighborhood, sparking public anger and fueling concerns about police conduct in the restive north west Region.

The incident, described by officials as a case of mistaken identity, has ignited controversy and deepened existing distrust between security forces and the civilian population.

The shooting occurred in the “Seven Doors” area of Old Town, known for its high levels of illicit drug activity.

According to reports, the soldier, recently deployed from the northern regions and dressed in civilian clothing while carrying a gun, was visiting the area when a police officer from Bamenda Public Security encountered him.

Mistaking the soldier for a separatist fighter, the officer opened fire, resulting in the soldier’s death.

The revelation that the victim was also a member of the armed forces has been met with shock and condemnation, prompting serious questions about the security forces’ operating procedures.

The incident has also served to amplify existing anxieties and mistrust amongst the civilian population already grappling with the ongoing Anglophone Crisis.

“This is a tragic situation, and it raises serious questions about how our security forces are operating,” said one resident who wished to remain anonymous.

The incident has fueled a lot of questions from the public. Many are demanding answers regarding the soldier’s presence in the known drug den of “Seven Doors,” particularly given his recent arrival.

“It was just a newly transferred army from Garoua, so how come he knows about 7 doors?” on resident questioned.

Others are also scrutinizing the police officer’s actions, questioning the lack of investigation before the use of lethal force.

Concerns have also been raised about the officer’s attire, with some pointing out that standard procedure in a conflict zone dictates officers should be in uniform.

The shooting has further strained the already fragile relationship between security forces and the community.

Residents are demanding a transparent and thorough investigation into the incident, calling for accountability for those responsible and seeking a path towards rebuilding trust.
