Pope Francis’ Condition Worsens: Swiss Guard Allegedly Rehearsing Funeral

The Roman Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis, remains in critical condition following a severe asthmatic respiratory crisis. This has been compounded by pneumonia and a complex lung infection, the Vatican confirmed on Saturday. The 88-year-old pontiff, has been hospitalised for a week at Rome’s Gemelli hospital. However, he continues to receive intensive medical care. This includes high-flow oxygen therapy and blood transfusions to address a low platelet count.

The Vatican’s latest statement reported that the “Holy Father continues to be alert and spent the day in an armchair, although in more pain than yesterday. At the moment the prognosis is reserved.”

Medical experts warn that the primary concern is the risk of sepsis, a dangerous blood infection that can arise as a complication of pneumonia. However, as of Friday, no signs of sepsis had been detected, and Pope Francis was responding to his current treatments.

On February 14, the hospital admitted Pope Francis after a week-long bout of bronchitis. This has worsened his long-standing battle with chronic lung disease. Doctors later diagnosed his condition as a complex respiratory infection caused by viruses, bacteria, and fungi. These led to pneumonia in both lungs. Doctors have prescribed “absolute rest,” a combination of cortisone and antibiotics, and supplemental oxygen as needed.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, head of medicine and surgery at Gemelli hospital, noted that Pope Francis is fully aware of the seriousness of his condition. “He knows he’s in danger,” Alfieri stated. “And he told us to relay that.”

Vatican Denies Resignation Speculation

Amid growing speculation about the pope’s potential resignation, Vatican officials have moved to dispel rumors. Pope Francis has acknowledged that he has written a resignation letter to be enacted if he becomes medically incapable of leading the Church.. However, he remains conscious, alert, eating, and continuing some work.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, dismissed the rumours. He told Corriere della Sera, “On the other hand, I think it is quite normal that in these situations uncontrolled rumours can spread or some misplaced comment is uttered.” This is certainly not the first time it has happened. However, I don’t see any particular movement, and so far, I haven’t heard anything like that.

Reports fuelled further speculation that the Vatican secretly convened high-ranking officials at the hospital, an allegation the Holy See flatly denied.

Funeral Rehearsals Underway?

Adding to concerns about the pope’s condition, reports surfaced suggesting that the Swiss Guard had begun rehearsing funeral preparations. According to Swiss newspaper Blick, members of the Guard have been placed under curfew as they “prepare for the pontiff’s death.”

The pope himself has previously acknowledged that he has already prepared his burial site. It is reported that this would break from traditional papal funeral arrangements. His hospitalisation has also led to the cancellation or rescheduling of several papal engagements, further raising concerns about his ability to continue leading the Catholic Church.

Italian Cardinal Angelo Comastri, 81, offered a spiritual perspective on the situation, telling broadcaster Rai, “Francis is very calm. His helm is in the hands of the Lord.”

As the Vatican and the world await further updates, the pope’s health remains a matter of global concern. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether he can overcome his current medical challenges and resume his duties as the leader of the Catholic Church.
