Pope Leo XIV Sends First Message to Cameroon on National Day

His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has conveyed his first official greetings to the Republic of Cameroon on the occasion of the country’s National Day. This was contained in a message delivered through the Apostolic Nunciature in Yaoundé.

Addressed to President Paul Biya, the letter expresses goodwill and emphasizes themes of peace, justice, and cultural heritage. “On the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Cameroon, I am pleased to offer to Your Excellency the best wishes for you and for your fellow citizens,” Pope Leo XIV stated.

The papal message also highlights a desire for unity and shared prosperity. “I entrust to the Lord everyone’s efforts to build a future of peace and prosperity by drawing on the rich human and cultural heritage of your country, with a concern for justice and respect for each person.”

The letter was formally delivered by the Apostolic Nuncio to Cameroon, José Avelino Bettencourt, who reaffirmed the Holy See’s commitment to diplomatic relations with Cameroon. In a note appended to the letter, he wrote: “Je saisis volontiers l’occasion pour Vous renouveler, Excellence Monsieur le Président de la République, l’assurance de ma plus haute considération,” confirming the Nunciature’s continued support and respect for the Cameroonian Head of State.

This marks the first official communication from Pope Leo XIV to Cameroon since his election to the papacy, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the Accord-Cadre between Cameroon and the Holy See, as noted by a commemorative label affixed to the document.

The message, while ceremonial, is viewed as a reaffirmation of the Vatican’s enduring relationship with Cameroon and a call to national values rooted in peace, justice, and mutual respect.
