Pope Francis hospitalised with respiratory infection

Pope Francis has been hospitalised with a respiratory infection and will need to stay in a hospital in Rome for a few days.

The information was contained in a statement released this evening by the Vatican.


The 86-year-old is reported to have had breathing problems in recent days.

it was however confirmed that the pope does not have Covid, according to the Vatican statement.


The Pontiff, the statement said, would need “a few days of appropriate hospital medical therapy”.


“Pope Francis is touched by the many messages received and expresses his gratitude for the closeness and prayer,” the statement further confirmed.

Pope Francis ascended the supreme authority of the Roman Catholic Church in 2013 when his predecessor Benedict VIX retired.
