Pope Francis has added his voice to thousands across the globe for the release of five priests and other christians abducted days ago in Mamfe, South West Region of Cameroon.
They were picked up on September 16, 2022 by men believed to be separatist fighters that have been waging battle against the Cameroon government for over five years today.
The gunmen stormed St. Mary’s Catholic Nchang Parish of Mamfe Diocese, razing buildings in the Parish premises, including the church, before carting off the victims. Reports say the demanded a Ranson of 60 million FCFA for the release of those taken.
In the Angélus today, Pope Francis prayed for among others, those held in captivity in Cameroon.
“I join in the appeal of the Bishops of Cameroon for the liberation of some people kidnapped in the diocese of Mamfe, including five priests and a religious sister,” the religious authority noted.
He went on: “I pray for them and for the populations of the Ecclesiastical province of Bamenda: may the Lord give peace to hearts and to the social life of that dear country.”
The Mamfe incident is one of many instances where the church in Cameroon has come under attack by separatist fighters or government forces. In most instances, perpetrators have walked scot free after acting with impunity.
The Pope’s prayer is one of many for the Anglophone crisis victims and Cameroon in general. In Cameroon, multiple sessions and ecumenical services have also been held to pray for peace and understanding between the warring factions.
