Press under attack: “The arrest and detention of Paul Chouta was orchestrated from the presidency” – Barrister Alice Nkom

Paul Chouta a Cameroon web journalist was arrested more than one year ago following charges of defamation by Calixthe Beyella.

The journalist while in jail suffered from corona virus and equally survived from food poisoning. Whatever reason it is that Paul Chouta was arrested for, the intention was for him to initially die while in detention many believe.

Barrister Alice Nkom made some shocking revelations about a completely different case that the complainant Calixthe Beyella wanted add to Paul Chouta’s and have them tried as a single case. The Barrister recounts the ordeals of her little cousin who owns a school in Douala “Le Paradis des Anges” which was founded 25 years ago.

It so happened Calixthe Beyella moved and was living near the school. She then suddenly asked for the school to be relocated to a different area, reason being that the students from the school made a lot of noise.

Since the school proprietor obviously would not cooperate and was really defiant about the issue, Beyella decided to add her to her list of unwanted persons. An order from Yaounde was then sent for the School proprietor to be arrested and transferred to Yaounde.

In the meantime, Calixthe Beyala seeks for the proprietor’s case to be joint apparently with that of already-incarcerated journalist, Paul Chouta.

The intention was for both cases to be placed under defamation and as the same crime committed by accomplices, even though neither Paul Chouta nor the proprietor of the school knew each other.

Barrister Alice Nkom reveals that while they were at the police station trying to follow up the cases when constant calls came from the presidency of the republic with instructions on what to do with Beyella’s prisoners.

Her request for a joint case however was not granted and the two cases are being treated differently.

The case of Chouta has since witnessed a series of adjournments.
