According to the Nigerian police, the primary suspect in the death of Nigerian Afrobeats star Mohbad is believed to be a nursing assistant, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, who allegedly administered drugs to him.

This means that Naira Marley, the popular Afrobeats star who has been under intense scrutiny, is now not treated as a prime suspect. However, he and music promoter Sam Larry have both been arrested on allegations of bullying and harassment towards Mohbad.

The police announced on Friday that, despite the fact that the two individuals were not in the country when Mohbad was injured and killed, there is substantial electronic and credible witness evidence connecting them to cyberbullying, threats to life, assault resulting in harm, and behaviour that could potentially lead to a disturbance of peace against the deceased during his lifetime.

Mohbad’s Death

Last month, MohBad passed away under unclear circumstances at a hospital.

The untimely passing of the 27-year-old sparked an overwhelming wave of sorrow among his devoted fans, who fervently called for a comprehensive investigation to be conducted.

On Friday, the police announced that a nurse who had treated Mohbad was suspected of administering an injection in a negligent manner. The nurse has been arrested and has not yet provided a comment.

Chain of events

The Nigerian police have provided a detailed account of the sequence of events that resulted in Mohbad’s death in the city of Lagos.

According to Idowu Owohunwa, the commissioner of the Lagos State Police Command, on September 10th, Mohbad, whose real name is Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, sustained injuries during a “violent fight” with his childhood friend, Oluwatosin Owoduni, also known as Primeboy.

Mohbad, who is a married father with a five-month-old child, attempted to strike Mr. Owoduni. However, he accidentally missed and ended up cutting his hand while attempting to smash a car window.

According to the commissioner, in the subsequent days, the wound started to swell and Mohbad expressed his distress by describing the pain as “unbearable”.

Another friend, Ayobami Sadiq, contacted nursing assistant Feyisayo Ogedengbe and requested her presence at Mohbad’s residence to provide medical treatment for the star.

Both Mr. Sadiq and Mr. Owoduni have refrained from commenting on the commissioner’s statement. Both individuals have been arrested.

According to the commissioner, Ms Ogedengbe administered three different drugs to Mohbad on September 12th. Shortly after, he started to vomit and experience convulsions.

Mohbad was subsequently rushed to the hospital, where he tragically passed away. The burial of his body took place the next day.

Case ongoing

Commissioner Owohunwa stated that the ongoing police investigation revealed that Ms. Ogedengbe, as a nursing assistant, lacked the necessary qualifications to administer the injections.

The charges that Ms. Ogedengbe and Mr. Owoduni are facing have not been disclosed by the police. However, it was stated that Mr. Sadiq was being detained on charges of conspiracy to commit a felony. This was due to allegations that he had invited an unqualified nurse to provide medical treatment to Mohbad in a setting that did not meet clinical standards.

Marley, who was described by Apple Music last year as an essential figure in Nigerian pop music, has previously denied any involvement in Mohbad’s death.

Neither he nor Larry has commented on the police statement made on Friday.
