A man security forces in Kumba, Meme division of Cameroon’s crisis-ruined South West region arrested several months back, is said to be languishing in detention on grounds that he allowed his sister to date a separatist fighter.
The man whose name, MMI got only as Hilary is said to be in his 30s is reported to have been in detention in Kumba for several weeks before later being transferred to Buea.
He was said to be living in Ikiliwindi Mile 10 in Konye subdivision. Accounts hold that, on December 24, 2021, Hilary visited the town of Kumba for shopping in preparation for Christmas, but was arrested on his way back.
“The family presented the 500,000 FCFA they had asked for bail, but failed to have him released,” a source revealed, adding that, the security forces accused Hilary of failing to report to security forces that his sister had dated a man who joined the ranks of separatist fighters when the Anglophone crisis sparked.
“Even after investigating and finding out he had no links with the fighter, they still held him back saying he should have reported his sister to them,” our source who is familiar with the case stated.
The said suspected separatist fighter whom Hilary’s sister is accused of having dated ironically, remains a free man and goes about his activities in the town of Kumba freely. This, is according to accounts from Hilary relatives.
The officers, the source went on, “told us he (Hilary) would be transferred to Buea and detained for six months before his trial can commence.”
Hilary, as they had threatened, was eventually sent to the regional capital, Buea, where he remains detained. In addition to being detained under horrible conditions, he is yet to have any proceedings launched against him, and continues to wallow like many others in similar situation.
