Rector Says Politics Is Behind Successive Strikes At University Of Douala.

Support staff of the University of Douala have suspended the strike action initiated since Monday 4th March 2019.

The decision came after a meeting with the Rector of the University of Douala, Prof. François Xavier Etoa.

The support staff of the University of Douala say their are suspending the strike action that could resume in 3 months if their demands are not met.

According to the Rector of the University of Douala, Francois Xavier Etoa a consensus has been reached, to increase their minimum wage rate and reinstate some advantages demanded by the support staff excluding some like Christmas gifts.

In the meantime, the Nation wide strike action of support staff continues in other state universities notably Bamenda, Dschang , Buea, Maroua, and Ngaoundere, with the exception of the universities of Yaounde 1 and 2, which failed to respect the call for protest.
It remains uncertain why the nationwide strike action, initiated by the national exco of SYNES was not respected in Yaounde 1 and 2 universities.

Meanwhile, the National Union of Teachers of Higher Education SYNES University of Douala chapter, have begun a 3-day strike action in all campuses of the University of Douala this Wednesday March 6th 2019.

They are demanding among other things, the payment of over two years of research and mission allowances, accumulated unpaid allowances of visiting lecturers and the limited lecture halls for lessons in the University of Douala.

Commenting Tuesday March 5th, on the announced strike and demands of the striking lecturers ,the Rector of the University of Douala said the problem of lecture hall is above his competence as the contract to construct lecture hall was already awarded to some enterprises.

He however promised to channel the worry the ministry in charge for proper follow up. On the problem of research and mission allowances they Rector indicated that the ministry is solely in charge of disbursing the money, which till date has not been disbursed.

Professor Xavier Etoa however raised suspicions on the successive unfolding of strike actions which began with students, support staff and then staff . According to him, the chain of strike actions have a political underpinning, probably as objective to move from Douala to to other parts of Cameroon.

Last week, students of the said university threatened a to go on strike action over the delay of University authorities to disburse finances of the Presidential excellence grant.
