The Cameroon Baptist Convention (CBC), one of Cameroon’s largest religious organisations, has elected Rev. Tekeh John Ekema as its new Executive President. With decades of pastoral and leadership experience, Rev. Tekeh succeeds Rev. Nditemeh Charlemagne, whose tenure was marked by significant organisational reforms and leadership challenges. The election of Rev. Tekeh signals a fresh chapter for the CBC. The church is seeking to overcome internal disputes and focus on its spiritual and social mission.

Leadership Amidst Legal Battles

Rev. Tekeh inherits a church that is currently struggling with a history of legal disputes. For instance, during the tenure of his predecessor, Rev. Charlemagne, CBC leadership faced lawsuits from dissenting members alleging unconstitutionality and procedural breaches. In May 2024, church members withdrew their charges, leading to the dismissal of their case against the CBC and its leadership. Church leaders celebrated this outcome as a triumph of truth over division, however, additional lawsuits emerged.

Internal Divisions and Reconciliation Efforts

The CBC’s recent challenges have underscored the need for reconciliation and unity. Some congregations, such as Nkwen Baptist Church and Bethany Baptist Church, publicly distanced themselves from members who pursued legal actions against the church. The General Council, the CBC’s decision-making body, has since taken steps to address internal disputes and discourage legal actions that could further divide the organisation.

Rev. Tekeh’s Vision for Unity and Growth

As Executive President, Rev. Tekeh is expected to prioritise uniting the CBC’s diverse membership and restoring trust among its congregations. Known for his dedication to community development and spiritual leadership, he will likely focus on continuing reforms in governance, expanding health and education initiatives, and fostering inclusivity within the church. His leadership comes at a critical moment, as the CBC seeks to solidify its role as a spiritual and social pillar for its over 8,000 members across 111 congregations.

Looking Ahead

Rev. Tekeh’s election presents an opportunity for the CBC to chart a new course, tackle past challenges, and build a stronger foundation for the future. For CBC members and observers, his leadership represents a chance for renewal and progress in one of Cameroon’s most influential religious organisations.
