Armed robbery and incidents of kidnapping have spiralled in communities in the North West Region, as the Anglophone Crisis drags on, forcing community members to take justice into their own hands and fight for their own security.

Residents in Njaah, a village near Acha Tugi, in Mbengwi Central Subdivision, recently killed a man who was believed to be part of a gang that had come to abduct a businessman. The alleged kidnappers were two in number.

After the village vigilante apprehended them, the mob killed one of the assailants, and handed the other to the police for further investigation.

Other alleged gang members escaped, but the vigilante group has vowed to track them down.

Cases of mob justice and vigilante interventions are becoming more frequent in the North West Region as the security situation remains volatile due to the Anglophone Crisis.

In remote communities, villagers are taking active measures to protect themselves from kidnappings, extortion, and violence.

Authorities confirmed that the vigilante group in Acha Tugi recovered two AK rifles, two motorcycles, and two mobile phones from the attackers.

These items were handed over to the Senior Divisional Officer (SDO) for Momo Division, who commended the community for its vigilance.

He urged residents to remain alert and report any suspicious individuals in their villages.

The Mayor of Mbengwi Council, who visited Njah village following the incident, also praised the villagers for their bravery in confronting heavily armed criminals.

Mob Justice in Other Communities

This is not an isolated case. In Ngie, another locality in Momo Division, villagers recently captured and executed suspected kidnappers attempting to abduct residents. Meanwhile in Pinyi, a similar incident was reported.

Insecurity in the North West Region of Cameroon is pushing communities to take matters into their own hands, as they intensify efforts to fight back against armed gangs.
