Rising Tensions in Nigeria as crowds gather in Abuja, accuse INEC of rigging

A mob of irate protestors has assembled outside Nigeria’s national collation centre in Abuja.

They are carrying signs that accuse the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) of stealing votes.

Three days after Nigerians voted in an election rocked by violent disturbances and ballot box stealing, tensions in the country are rising.

Opposition parties have called for a new election, claiming that INEC rigged the vote, which the electoral body rejects.

At a recent press conference in Abuja, when his party and two other opposition parties called for the election to be cancelled, the PDP chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, urged calm.

“We don’t want Nigerians to erupt,” he said.

Previously, the police head cautioned candidates and their parties not to incite violence.

The electoral commission INEC has announced that there have been serious technical issues that have made uploading results to its server difficult.

Dino Melaye, the PDP’s agent, said during a press conference in Abuja that the server faults should have been resolved before any results were declared.
