Roger Milla - Icon of Cameroon and African football
On June 28th, 1994, Roger Milla cemented his place in footballing history by becoming the oldest player to score a goal in a FIFA World Cup match. But this achievement was just one chapter in the remarkable story of the Cameroonian striker.
Milla’s career began not on the football pitch, but with aspirations of becoming a high jump champion. However, his destiny took him to the beautiful game. He quickly rose to prominence, becoming a key figure in helping Cameroon qualify for their first World Cup appearance in 1982. Although the Indomitable Lions didn’t progress beyond the group stage, Milla left his mark, even having a goal controversially disallowed.
Following the 1984 Olympics, Milla announced his retirement from international football at the age of 36. However, his love for the game and his nation’s call proved too strong to resist. In 1990, at the age of 38, Milla emerged from retirement to lead Cameroon on a magical run at the World Cup in Italy. His electrifying pace and clinical finishing, often coming off the bench, defied expectations. He became a global sensation, celebrating his goals with his now iconic corner flag jig. Cameroon reached the quarter-finals, becoming the first African team to achieve that feat, with Milla a major inspiration.
Milla’s story doesn’t end there. He defied age even further, participating in the 1994 World Cup in the USA at the incredible age of 42. It was on this day, June 28th, 1994, that he etched his name in the record books by scoring a goal against Russia, solidifying his legendary status.
Roger Milla’s legacy extends beyond his World Cup heroics. He was a pioneer for African football on the world stage, captivating audiences with his talent and infectious joy for the game. His remarkable career, defying age limitations and inspiring generations, makes him a true footballing icon.
