SDF announces boycott of 2020 twin elections

The Social Democratic Front, SDF has maintained its decision to boycott the forthcoming municipal and legislative elections in the country.

The move follows a stance earlier taken in Douala in August during a NEC meeting.
They party had said “…President Paul Biya declared war on the 30th of November 2017.A civil war that has brought about killings, displaced of persons, refugees and other ills. Therefore,it is incumbent on Mr Biya not only to bring the civil war to an end but also provide a definitive solution that will create an enabling environment for children to return to school to return to school and for elections to take place;failure to which SDF will be obliged to withhold its parliamentarians from attending November 2019 session”.

They then warned “If elections are convened and held under the present circumstances, the SDF will not participate and this will be tantamount to breaking the country into two”.

In a telephone interview with Mimi Mefo Info this morning, SDF Communication Secretary, Denis Nkemlemo maintained that their position to withdraw elective officials has not changed.

To Denis Nkemlemo “SDF has not issued any contrary release to the decision that was taken in Douala in August. So our position is obvious to everyone”.

Political commentators have argued that the position of the SDF to boycott next year’s municipal and legislative elections is not mainly for the interest of the people but fears to lose the election in the North West and South West which are the political stronghold of the party.
