One month and some days to the February municipal and legislative elections the Electoral District of the Social Democratic Front, SDF party in Bafut, North West region has stated that it will not be taking part.According to a resolution signed by the Electoral district Chairman, the decision comes as a follow up to an earlier declaration made weeks back at a press conference in Yaounde by the 1st deputy national Chairman of the party.Due to “the devastating situation going on in the North West and South West regions and taking into consideration the prevailing unhealthy political situations … the Bafut Electoral district will not participate in the upcoming parliamentary and municipal elections of 9th February 2020” the district chairman noted. This he went on, is “until the political problems are resolved and peace returns”.IMG 20191230 WA0123The resolution he explained further ” pertains to all the candidates who have applied for the position of parliamentarian and municipal councillors in the Bafut Electoral district”.”All their candidatures have been cancelled” he added. The recent decision comes at a time when several politicians in the Anglophone regions especially those of the SDF party have decided not to run in the elections, due to the armed conflict. The MRC and other political parties had earlier pulled out of the race entirely, citing the crisis too and the non revision of the electoral code among key reasons. At the last governor’s conference, Territorial Administration Minister Atanga Nji however promised that the election will take place in peace and serenity in all divisions of the national territory, a declaration several politicians and individuals term window dressing to blind the international community.
