Nine-year-old Thelma is the latest victim of Bamenda floods
The search for nine-year-old Thelma has ended tragically with the discovery of her body downstream of the Mbatu Dam in Bamenda II subdivision. The turbulent waters of the River Ntanche in Bamenda I subdivision swept away the young girl as she swam with two others earlier on Tuesday, October 1st.
Local sources report that searchers found Thelma’s body several metres from the dam after hours of exhaustive searching. The local population joined forces to aid search teams from the 50th Army rescue group, hoping for a different outcome. However, their efforts led to a tragic discovery when they found the young girl’s lifeless body late in the day.
Residents are in shock after the incident, with many expressing sadness and concern about safety around water bodies, especially during the current rainy season.
Following the death of the nine-year-old, army rescue officers urge caution near water bodies as heavy rainfall swells rivers and creates dangerous currents in the region.
