Startling revelations made public by the Minister of Secondary Education, Dr. Nalova Lyonga say more than 200 secondary schools across Cameroon are currently operating without toilets.
Le Jour Newspaper says the Minister made these remarks in a video conference on the occasion of the ‘World Toilet Day’ celebrated every November 20.
Dr. Nalova Lyonga described the situation of lack of toilets in schools as “worrying”.
According to figures released by the Minister, approximately 198 Government secondary schools run without toilets, and 96 private schools as well.
Students in these institutions are left to improvise when they have to ease themselves, something not very comfortable according to the minister.
“When you receive strangers to your house when they don’t go to the living room, they go to the bathroom. These are places that provide information on who you are and how you live, ” the Minister said.
She used the opportunity to call on the school authorities of every secondary school to ensure the provision of proper toilets in their schools.
However, the Minister failed to map out a strategy that will enforce the implementation of this.
