The Senior Divisional Officer (SDO) of Dschang, Max Mbella Edjenguelè, has threatened to go to ‘war’ to stop traders engaging in unethical business practices.

In a press release issued on July 11, 2023, the SDO called on food traders in the West Region of Cameroon to stop using formalin to ripen plantains, bananas, fruits, and vegetables.

The press release stated that formalin is a dangerous substance that can be harmful to human health.

“The use of formalin to ripen fruits and vegetables is a serious health hazard,” the SDO said. He urges them to allow these food items to grow and ripen naturally.

The SDO said that his office will be conducting unannounced regular inspections to ensure that food traders are not using carbide. Any traders found using carbide will be prosecuted.

In addition to announcing these impromptu raids on markets to seize goods unfit for consumption, the administrative authority invites consumers to be vigilant and calls on them to denounce these crooked traders to the authorities.
