Two people were killed yesterday in a suspected attack by Ambazonia separatists in Bamenda, in the North West Region of Cameroon, according to eyewitnesses. The incident adds to the ongoing tensions in the Bamenda.

The attack began with gunshots, according to a shaken eyewitness who spoke to MMI reporter Kate Bih. “I was in my shop when I heard gunshot sounds,” she recalled. “When I stood up to check, I saw a Brasseries truck descending the Fish Pond hill uncontrollably.”

The attack happened while the Brasseries truck driver, only known as Clifford by witnesses, was making a routine delivery run from the Che Street neighbourhood. The truck was carrying a load of beverages.

Witnesses reported that the attackers, believed to be separatists, targeted Clifford by shooting him in the head while he was driving. The driverless truck careened down the hill, veering off the road and crashing through a makeshift shop before being stopped by an oncoming vehicle.

The attack claimed the lives of both Clifford and another individual. The community is reeling from the violence. The senselessness of the attack has been echoed by residents, who have condemned the unnecessary loss of life.

The bodies of the victims have been transported to the morgue. Residents are left to mourn the loss of life and call for an end to the violence. This latest incident highlights the ongoing human cost of the Anglophone Crisis.

Cameroon, a central African nation, has been grappling with the Anglophone Crisis since 2017. The crisis stems from historical grievances held by the English-speaking minority (Anglophones) who feel marginalized by the French-speaking majority (Francophones) in the government.
