By David Atangana

At least three officers of the rapid intervention battalion, an elite unit of Cameroon’s, defense and security forces have died following a separatist ambush in Mabonji, on the outskirt of Kumba in the Meme Division of the restive South West region.

They were attacked on May 16, 2023, with the use of a local improvised explosive device (IED).

The ‘Reborns’ , an armed separatist militia operating in the area have claimed responsibility for the attack.

In a viral video, the fighters showed three riffles, two helmets, and a bulletproof vest with BIR insignia on them, which they claim was seized during the attack.

This development happened on the same day in which six separatist fighters in another division of the South West Region, surrendered their arms and embraced peace.
