Shanda Tonme Writes Strong Letter to Health Minister After Another Death in Bafoussam Hospital
Cameroonian public figure and president of COMICODI, Shanda Tonme, has sent a strong and urgent letter to the Minister of Public Health of the Biya regime, Manaouda Malachie, following the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn baby at the Regional Hospital of Bafoussam. The woman, Gisèle Tchuisseu, reportedly died after being denied proper medical attention, a case that has shocked the public and revived anger over negligence in public hospitals.
In his letter, Shanda Tonme says the situation in public hospitals has become unacceptable and dangerous. He accuses some medical workers of refusing care, abandoning patients, and acting without any sense of responsibility. He warns that hospitals, instead of saving lives, are becoming places where people go in healthy and come out dead.
Shanda reminds the Minister that this is not an isolated incident. Many families across Cameroon have lost loved ones in similar situations of negligence. He points out that these repeated deaths show a deep crisis in the health system. For him, it is a shame that women continue to die in labour and patients continue to suffer because of delays, careless behaviour, or lack of basic attention from hospital staff.
In the letter, Shanda Tonme urges Minister Manaouda to take real action. He calls for an honest investigation into the Bafoussam case and for strong sanctions against all medical workers who neglect their duties. He also says it is time for Cameroon to hold a national health forum to rethink how hospitals operate and to restore trust between citizens and the health system.
According to him, the current situation is damaging the image of the country and destroying families. He insists that Cameroonians deserve hospitals where they feel safe, respected, and treated with dignity.
This latest tragedy has once again put pressure on the Ministry of Health to respond and take responsibility for the many deaths linked to medical negligence in Cameroon.
