Soldier Arrested For Gunning Down Driver In Bamenda, Relatives Contradict Government’s Narratives

Residents of Mankon, Bamenda were taken aback today when a soldier shot dead a driver at the premises of a hospital in the area.

Hours after the incident, Defence Minister, Joseph Beti Assomo has reacted stating that the soldier acted “in violation of the rules of engagement”.

Minister Joseph Beti Assomo says, explains that the driver was stopped by a patrol tracking those he described as “terrorists” but failed to yield to instructions.

The driver would later be gunned down by a soldier who “opened fire, in violation of the rules of engagement”.

While the driver’s corpse was taken to the Bamenda Regional Hospital Mortuary, “the soldier who fired the shots was immediately arrested and is in the Bamenda gendarmerie company” the minister States.

“An in flagrante delicto investigation was immediately ordered and is underway. The quintessence of its findings may be made public in due course” the press release adds.

Today’s incident comes shortly after government forces attacked a Ngarbuh village on the Donga Mantung division of the restive North West region, leaving over 35 dead including women and kids.

Relatives have contradicted Minister’s version of the story. According to a source close to the family, the victim whose name MMI got at Christopher was about to transport drinks for funeral, when he saw an injured man on his way and took him to the hospital. “The military vehicle immediately entered the hospital premises and shot him dead,” our source continued.

The same minister defended his troops, calling them professionals, days back after the latter killed over 35 civilians including children in Ngarbuh, provoking widespread condemnation…
